In 2009 I was diagnosed with an auto immune disease called Poly Myalgia Rheumatica. It is an inflammation of the muscles around the joints of shoulders and hips mainly but can include the knees, elbows and neck as was my case. It comes on suddenly and is truly debilitating causing excruciating pain with even the simplest of moves. After quite a few tests the diagnosis was given and Prednisone was the prescribed drug. This disease can last 2 to 4 years or longer. For the past 2 ½ years I underwent several lengthy courses of Prednisone. In between I tried it on my own, reading about natural ways to handle the disease but to no avail. Prednisone gave me my life back, mostly pain free, but I did not want to continue on the drug for months at a time, with all it’s potentially very harmful side effects.
In May of 2012 I visited my son in Maryland, I am from California. He is an amazing athlete even at 43 years of age. He’s a cyclist, dedicated to and focused on his sport. During my visit my son suggested I talk to his nutritionist, Anne Guzman. He wanted to gift me a month with her, feeling that she would be able to help my situation. My son, DJ, had worked with Anne who helped him tremendously finding which foods worked with his body to give him more energy and strength. When I returned home to California, I contacted Anne and we started on our journey.
I am NOT an athlete but that didn’t matter to Anne. After interviewing me and documenting my medical history and eating habits she suggested eliminating just about everything I liked to eat. Five NOs: sugar, dairy, gluten, eggs and the night shade vegetables (potatoes, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes). As startling as that sounds, she gave me lists of foods I could eat along with wonderful recipes to prepare. For the next 4 months we worked together, talking with her about once a week and emailing constantly. Because Anne normally works with athletes, I knew this was a challenge for her but together we were able to get me on a great system of eating 3 meals a day with 2 snacks and quite a few supplements. Also she gave me a few “tricks” to help with digestion and get my whole system operating peacefully so I could heal from the inside out. I was never hungry, in fact I struggled to eat the amount that Anne wanted me to eat.
I now feel well. I have been off Prednisone for almost 3 months and yes I do have a few pains here and there but they are tolerable, after all I am almost 67 years old. Few people at my age are completely pain free. I am able to do almost everything I used to do. I still have the disease but I am drug free and know that Anne was the one who guided me in the right direction to start healing my body from the inside out. I am so grateful for my son introducing me to her. She has truly been a Godsend.
Anne is such a positive person and so knowledgeable concerning the human body, how it works, and what to do to help you be the healthiest you can be. Good nutritional advice supplied by an expert such as Anne will help any body become the best it can be, athlete or not.
